Dr. TP CHANG, a journalist-cum-communication academic by training, has more than 25 years of professional experience in the field of communication and media. His observation and research focused on political economy of communication, communication law and policies, new media, journalism as well as information and communication technologies. He is also one of the few experts on Chinese-medium media in Malaysia and Singapore.
Dr. TP CHANG obtained his first degree, Bachelor of Communication (Honours), from the School of Communication, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), and Masters of Philosophy ( M. Phil ) from the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), with his research thesis, Mass Media and the Hegemony of Barisan Nasional: A Case Study of the Role of the Mainstream Media During the 1997 Financial Crisis in Malaysia. With scholarship awarded by the Ministry of Education, Taiwan, Dr. TP CHANG earned his doctoral degree in communication studies under the Ph.D Program in Communication Studies, Shih Hsin University, Taiwan. His doctoral thesis, The Governmentality of Internet Media: A Comparative Study on Malaysia and Singapore, was well-received during the viva voce and was awarded The Best Doctoral Thesis Award (second place) by the Taiwan Association of Southeast Asian Studies.
Dr. TP CHANG has under his belt several books, journal articles and chapters in books, of which one of his important publications was Strong PM vs. Weak-kneed Media: Taking Stock of Mahathir’s Media Manipulation (2004). He is also a regular columnist and contributor for various media in Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong, with more than two hundred articles that have been published over the years, providing insightful analyses on the state of affairs in communication and media. The latest collection of his selected articles, Criticism and Reform: A Collection of Essays on Malaysian Media and Communication, was published in 2016.
